Kudos to Tiwa Savage on new video

Barely 24 hours after Tiwa Savage premiered the ‘daring’ video for her song entitled, Wanted, the singer is still in the news. With over 62,000 views on YouTube as at the time of going to press, Nollywood filmmaker, Charles Novia, bluntly described the video as a “stupid art” while Uti Nwachukwu came to her defence, describing critics of the video as “dead hypocrites.” Beat FM presenter Gbemi Olateru–Olagbegi, on the other hand, also tweeted, “You can’t be hailing Beyoncé, Rihanna, Shakira for their sexiness and hating on Tiwa for a sexy video.”
CRAZY WORLD: 16-year-old boy admits to killing parents for taking away his iPod

16-year-old Vincent Parker from Virgina admitted to a judge, May 27 that he murdered his parents because they kept taking away his iPod. The 10th grader was an honor roll student at Norview High School, but his frustration with his parents refusing to lighten their punishments somehow caused him to flip. Via WKTR The parents were found dead a week before last Christmas. Parker attacked his mother with pepper spray as she came out of an upstairs bathroom, stabbing her in the eye and then beating her in the head with a baseball bat and crowbar until she was dead. He then struck his father with a crowbar and stabbed him multiple times as soon as he walked through the front door. According to WTKR, Parker told the court that he “just got mad and went off” due to built up anger directed mainly towards his father. It’s all from my dad. All this stuff like my dad taking away my iPod and stuff. Parker first told police that his dad had started the physical confrontation, but soon admitted to murdering his parents. The father also lived long enough to tell the police what happened before dying from head injuries. Tried as an adult, Parker has pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder and will be sentenced in September. His grandfather told WKTR that he’s in shock that Vincent, who had a clean criminal record and almost never got in trouble in school, would kill his parents in revenge for such petty forms of discipline. He said, He is a smart young man. He is smart in school. I don’t know what happened. A psychiatric evaluation showed that Vincent was completely sane and possessed high intellectual potential. His defense attorney will ask the court to let him serve at least a portion of his sentence in a juvenile facility as the boy could go to jail for nearly the rest of his life if he is sentenced the maximum punishment for both murders.

Nigeria's president orders full scale offensive on Boko Haram

Speaking on Nigeria's Democracy Day, Goodluck Jonathan said he had authorized security forces to use any means necessary under the law to ensure that Boko Haram, which operates in the country's northeast, is defeated.
"I am determined to protect our democracy, our national unity and our political stability, by waging a total war against terrorism," Jonathan said in a televised speech.
It was not immediately clear what such an offensive might entail, given that the northeast of the country has been under a state of emergency and a full scale military operation for a year. Nigerian forces are also hugely overstretched.
Chad's President Idriss Deby also used the phrase "total war" after neighboring West African states met in Paris in mid-May to seek a common strategy to fight the militants.
"I assure you that Nigeria will be safe again and that these thugs will be driven away. It will not happen overnight, but we will spare no effort to achieve this goal," Jonathan said.
The scale of the challenge was underlined by a fresh attack on Thursday in the northeastern village of Gurmushi, near Nigeria's border with Cameroon, in which suspected Islamist gunmen riding motorbikes killed 32 people.
On April 14 Boko Haram militants surrounded a secondary school in the remote northeastern village of Chibok and took away in trucks 276 girls who had been sitting exams, according to official figures from an audit this week.
Nigeria's Borno state, the epicenter of the insurgency, said on Wednesday that a total of 57 of the kidnapped girls had escaped. But 219 others were still missing and assumed held by the militants, who say they are fighting for an Islamic state in Nigeria and have killed thousands over the years.
Since the day of the girls' abduction, Boko Haram have killed at least 500 civilians, according to a Reuters count.
"With the support of Nigerians, our neighbors and the international community, we will reinforce our defense, free our girls and rid Nigeria of terrorists," Jonathan said.
"I share the deep pain and anxiety of their parents."
INTERNATIONAL SPOTLIGHT
The mass abduction thrust the Islamist insurgency into the international spotlight like never before, with a Twitter campaign #BringBackOurGirls drawing in U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama and Hollywood star Angelina Jolie.
Capitalizing on this, Jonathan has sought to paint Boko Haram as part of a broader global jihadist movement being directed from abroad, the first time he has taken this line.
"Extremist foreign elements, collaborating with some of our misguided citizens," was one phrase he used to describe them.
"What we are witnessing in Nigeria today is a manifestation of the same warped and ferocious world view that brought down the Twin Towers in New York (and) killed innocent persons in Boston," Jonathan said, referring, respectively, to the September 11, 2001 attacks and the April 2013 marathon bombing.
Scores have been killed in Nigerian bombings in the past month, including two in the capital Abuja.
But signaling a willingness to negotiate, Jonathan said: "our doors remain open to them for dialogue and reconciliation."
Chief of Defence Staff Air Marshal Alex Badeh said on Tuesday the military knew where the abducted girls were but ruled out a rescue by force for fear of endangering them. The military was criticized for its slow response to the crisis, but Jonathan has accepted international help.
U.S. troops have deployed to Chad on a mission to find the girls, and surveillance drones are being used.

China to take 6 million older vehicles off roads

China's government plans to take 6 million older, polluting vehicles off the road this year in an effort to revive stalled progress toward cleaning up smog-choked cities.
The plan also calls for filling stations in Beijing, Shanghai and other major cities to switch to selling only the cleanest grades of gasoline and diesel, according to a Cabinet statement issued Monday.
The order comes after China failed to meet official pollution-reduction goals for 2011-2013, the statement said. It said vehicles registered before 2005 that fail to meet cleaner emissions standards will be "phased out," though it did not say how.
It called the country's environmental situation "extremely grim."
China's major cities are smothered in eye-searing smog. The country has some of the world's strictest emissions standards, but authorities have refrained from enforcing them until now to avoid forcing older, pollution-belching trucks off the road and hurting small businesses.
Monday's announcement suggests authorities have settled that conflict in favor of environmental protection following reports on the mounting health and economic costs of pollution.
Plans call for retiring 5 million older, polluting vehicles in Beijing, the nearby port of Tianjin and the deltas of the Yangtze River, around Shanghai, and the Pearl River, around the southern business center of Guangzhou, according to the statement. It gave no details on where the remaining 1 million vehicles due to be taken off the road were.
China has about 240 million vehicles on the road, and half are passenger cars, according to the Ministry of Public Security.
China is the world's biggest auto market by number of vehicles sold. Sales rose 15.7 percent last year to 17.9 million vehicles. Sales growth is slowing but analysts still expect an increase of 8 to 10 percent this year.
Taxi fleets and public buses in major cities have been required to switch to cleaner-burning natural gas or battery power. The government is promoting development of an electric car manufacturing industry.

After careful and heated debate by members present, the motion for the bill to be read for the third time and passed into law was moved by the Deputy Leader, Ekaete Okon, and seconded by Mr. Aniekan Akpan, a member representing Ukanafun State Constituency.
Consequently, the speaker directed the clerk of the House, Mrs Mandu Umoren, to forward a clean copy of the bill to the governor.

Nigerian defense chief says abducted girls located

ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — Nigeria's military has located nearly 300 school girls abducted by Islamic extremists but fears using force to try to free them could get them killed, the country's chief of defense said Monday.

Air Marshal Alex Badeh told demonstrators supporting the much criticized military that Nigerian troops can save the girls. But he added, "we can't go and kill our girls in the name of trying to get them back."

He spoke to thousands of demonstrators who marched to Defense Ministry headquarters in Abuja, the capital. Many were brought in on buses, indicating it was an organized event.
Asked by reporters where they had found the girls, Badeh refused to elaborate.
"We want our girls back. I can tell you we can do it. Our military can do it. But where they are held, can we go with force?" he asked the crowd.
People roared back, "No!"     "If we go with force what will happen?" Badeh asked.
"They will die," the demonstrators responded.
That appeared to leave negotiation the sole option, but a human rights activist close to negotiators said a deal to swap the girls for detained Boko Haram members was agreed last week and then scuttled at the last minute by President Goodluck Jonathan.
The activist who is close to those mediating between Boko Haram extremists and government officials said the girls would have been freed last week Monday.
Jonathan had already told British officials that he would not consider an exchange. The source spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue.
Nigeria's military and government have faced national and international outrage over their failure to rescue the girls seized by Boko Haram militants from a remote northeastern school six weeks ago.
President Jonathan was forced this month to accept international help. American planes have been searching for the girls and Britain, France, Israel and other countries have sent experts in surveillance and hostage negotiation. A.U.S. Defense Department spokesman said the department cannot confirm the reports about the Nigerian girls at this point. The official, who was not authorized to speak publicly about the situation, spoke on background. Jonathan's reluctance to accept offered help for weeks is seen as unwillingness to have outsiders looking in on what is considered a very corrupt force. Soldiers have told The Associated Press that they are not properly paid, are dumped in dangerous bush with no supplies and that the Boko Haram extremists holding the girls are better equipped than they are.
